This month marks the 155th anniversary of the birth of my great-grandfather, Charles Sherman “Charley” Hogue. Charley was born 15 Jan 1865 in Blount County, Tennessee, to William and Mary Jane Hogue. He was the fourth oldest of six children and grew up living the farming life in the shadows of the Great Smoky Mountains. The family stayed in this area, south of Maryville, TN, for a few years. They then moved near other relatives to Stecoah, NC. Finally, the family relocated 1000 miles west to the Indian Territory in 1880. For more details on Charley’s life, please go here.
He married his first wife in 1885, divorced her in 1901, and married my great-grandmother Nora Gatlin Noble on 22 Feb 1902, in Ardmore, Indian Territory. They settled in Rubottom, near Nora’s family, and started to raise their family. Rubottom was not far from Courtney Flat, where the Hogues first settled after their move from North Carolina. He joined the Masonic Lodge at Leon in 1892, and was a member for many years. Charley was mainly a farmer, like many others in that area along the Red River, but also worked for the Postal Service and for Love County after Oklahoma became a state in 1907.
Nora and Charley had seven children together and stuck it out through some rough times in Rubottom. Charley was known as a pretty tough character, but was respected for raising a great family. He passed away in Rubottom on 24 Jul 1917 and is buried in the Rubottom Cemetery. Nearby Belleville, just a few miles west, is the final resting place of his father. Charley is the real inspiration for my journey into genealogy and deserves a tribute or two here. Thanks for reading my blog! To return to the Home Page, click here.
