Hi and welcome back to The Hogue Connection! Today I’d like to share with you Family Focus #5, the fifth article in my Family Focus series. Let’s look at the life of Aldamanda Josephine Hogue, the oldest child in the family of William M. Hogue and Mary Jane Bates. Honestly, I’ve been holding off on this one because I thought her family was a huge one. Really, it’s not that much bigger than the rest of them!

A Birth Clue from Her Death Certificate…

…is unusual but makes sense when we look at the family’s migration pattern. Josie (what most called her) was born in Ducktown, TN on 5 Jul 1861.

Family Focus #5 - Josie DC

The informant here, Pat Crisp, was a relative, I believe. He knew Josie well enough to know who her parents were, anyway. Josie had moved to Graham County with her family sometime after December of 1874. She married John Harvey “Harve” Jenkins on 4 Aug 1878 at her dad William’s place in Stecoah, NC. Remember that the Hogue’s headed to Indian Territory after this date, leaving Josie and her husband, Harve, behind.

A word or two about her name…Aldamanda J. is listed on her marriage record. On the 1870 census she is listed as Josephine. In the 1880 census shows Amanda J. On the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census reports, she is listed as Josephine. That name also appears on her headstone. Many folks on Ancestry have her full name as Aldamanda Josephine Hogue, but I don’t think she used her first name much later in life.

A Word About the Crisps…

The Crisp family was a prominent one in Cherokee and Graham Counties. William M’s older sister Percy married John Leroy Crisp in 1835 in Burke County, NC. John and Percy are recorded on the 1850 census of Cherokee County, NC. Remember that Cherokee split in two, forming Graham County in 1872. I did a quick count of the residents of the Stecoah township using the 1880 census. Of the 562 people that lived there, 114 were Crisps, or about 20%. In the 1930 census, the year after Josie’s passing, there were 167 Crisps, or about 12%. No doubt we have plenty of Crisp cousins! In fact, four of Josie and Harve’s kids married Crisps.

Family Focus #5, A Roll Call of the Children…

Josie and Harve Jenkins had ten children:

Mary Louisa Jenkins (1880-1955) – married Jesse Wilburn Crisp on 5 Apr 1899 in Stecoah at Harve and Josie’s place. Jesse died in 1952 and Mary in 1955. Both are buried in the Old Mother Church Cemetery in Robbinsville, Graham County, NC. You can see their FindAGrave memorials here.

They had three children: Lucille “Lessie” Cody (1906-1975), Ella Cody (1908-2007), Elmer Cody (1910-2009). Belle passed away at the age of only 28. J.T. married Rhoda Cody and she died young as well, 36 years old in 1927 of cancer. He died in 1966 and is buried in Gastonia, NC. Belle is buried in the Hazie Brown Cemetery in Stecoah. I’ll post a link to that cemetery at the end.

Arizona Jenkins (1887-1952) – I’ve seen her listed as Zonie and Zona, and some families have her name as Nancy Arizona. She married James Pearlie Carringer on 7 Jul 1907 at Harve and Josie’s. They had seven children: Lillie Mae (1915-2013), Virgie Marie (1917-1995), Lexie M (1919-2002), James Leonard (1920-1998), twins Maude Etta (1927-2015) and Claude Dennis (1927-1997), and Carmel Eugene (1930-1957). I mentioned Claude in a previous article about his cenotaph here. Arizona died in 1952 and is buried at Hazie Brown.

She died at the age of 90 and his buried next to her husband in Jenkins Cemetery, Stecoah. Here is her memorial link.

Francis Martin Jenkins (1892-1999) – known by most as Martin, he married Arvie Martha Crisp on 14 Feb 1909 in Graham County. They had five children: George Vincent (1910-1992), Edward H. (1913-1972), Harley Elmer “Bill”, (1917-1996), Floyd Andrew (1924-1982), and Bessie Olean (1929-2011). Arvie died in 1969, and Martin passed in 1999 at the age of 106. They had 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Their graves are at Hazie Brown.

Harley Arnold Jenkins (1895-1966) – married Allie Mae Crisp on 2 Nov 1919 in Stecoah. Allie married William Francis Crisp first and had four children with him. Harley and Allie had no kids together. Allie died in 1962. Their graves are at the Jenkins Cemetery.

Sarah Magnolia “Maggie” Jenkins (1897-1985) – married Reuben A. Brock on 2 May 1915 in Stecoah at the Jenkins’ home. They had three children: Hoyett Alexander (1919-2006), Darlena Hortence (1920-2002), and, another son, born in 1926. At this point, he looks like he is still living. Reuben died in 1965 and Maggie in 1985. You’ll find them buried in the Old Mother Church Cemetery in Robbinsville. Here is her memorial

Kitty B. Jenkins (1901-1979) – married Thomas C. Carringer (the brother of James Pearlie above) on 5 Jul 1919 at Harve and Josie’s. They had nine children: Ada Ivelea (1921-1981), Alda Doris (1923-2009), Robert Bruce (1925-2005), Thomas Neal (1928-2010), Hall “Jack”, 1931-2007, Clota Jean (1934-2011), Ted B. (1937-2016), living son, born 1940, and T.C., 1947-2021). Kitty and Thomas moved out to Ellijay, GA after 1950 and lived there the rest of their lives. Thomas died in 1981. Both graves are in the Northcutt Cemetery. Here is her memorial

Roy E. Jenkins (1904-1907) – the last child born to Harve and Josie and the only one that didn’t make it to adulthood. His grave is also at Hazie Brown Cemetery.

Josephine died on 11 Mar 1929 in Stecoah at the age of 68. She lived there over 50 years. Harve passed away on 1 Dec 1944. They had 10 children and 38 grandchildren, just counting the ones named in the list above. They probably had over 100 great grandkids. Someone out there probably knows the answer to that one.
