Hi and welcome back to The Hogue Connection! It’s time for another deep dive into the family of William. M Hogue and Mary Jane Bates. In Family Focus #6, we’ll look at the descendants of my great grandfather Charles Sherman (Charley) Hogue (1865-1917). Charley had ten children with two wives, so let’s break them down in detail.

One of only three pictures I’ve ever seen of Charley. This is a group photo of the Masonic Lodge #16 in Leon, Indian Territory. Taken before 1907, Charley is third from the left in the front row. Important enough to carry a big stick. I found this on the internet. It is attributed to Patti Roach, the granddaughter of Daniel Starling Lawson, Charley’s cousin on his immediate left.
First Wife, Melinda Williams…
I’ve written about Melinda a few times in this space. You can go here for a closer look. Charley married Malinda on 6 May 1885 in either Indian Territory or Arkansas. I’m going with the I.T. at this point. They both appeared in the census together in 1900, enumerated in District 174, town of Courtney. This marriage produced three children:
John William Hogue (1894-1976) – married Ina Jewel Edwards on 20 Aug 1913 in Cornish, Jefferson Co., OK. They had 6 children: Callie (1915-1915), Bula Mae (1916-2008), Jessie Leona (1918-1996), JC (1919-1966), Margretta (1923-1937), and Johnnie D. (1925-2020). My grandpa Henry remembered seeing John come to Rubottom to visit Charley’s grave. For some reason, they all called him “Johnny Black”. His FindAGrave memorial is here.
Mary Caroline Hogue (1897-before 1910) – Mary died as a child. I haven’t found any record of her death or burial.
Edward Bell Hogue (1902-1932) – married Velma Lee Edwards (Ina’s sister) around 1922 in Dalhart, TX. They had two daughters, Lois L. “Lola” (1923-1968) and Doris Louise (1924-1995). Edward divorced Velma around 1930. He died 7 Mar 1932 of influenza with an underlying cause of intoxication. He is buried in Dalhart. Memorial link here.
Melinda filed for divorce on 1 Nov 1901, with a final decree issued on 13 Jan 1902. She was pregnant at the time with their third child, Edward. He was born 17 Apr 1902, around the same time as Melinda’s marriage to William Fletcher Thompson. She settled in Marietta, I.T. after the divorce.
Second Wife, Lenora Gatlin Noble…
Charley and Nora married on 22 Feb 1902 in Ardmore, I.T. She lived with her parents Mark and Analiza Gatlin when they moved to Rubottom via Clay County, TX. There she married John Noble. That marriage didn’t last; she was living with her parents when her son Frankie Noble was born in 1900. Nora was one of 13 children, born in Tippah, MS in 1880.
Family Focus #6, A Roll Call of the Children…
Leonard Richard Hogue (1904-1968) – married Alice Doughty (1909-1989) on 13 Mar 1926 in Jefferson Co., OK. They had four children: Kenneth (1929-1991), Carroll Norman (1931-1975), Betty Faye (1934-2018) and David Ray (1937-2020). His memorial is here.
Mary Ann Hogue (1905-1905) – stillborn and buried in Rubottom Cemetery with no marker.
Fannie May Hogue (1907-1980) – married James Elbert “Eb” Robeson (1902-1985) on 24 Dec 1922 in Jefferson Co., OK. They had five children: Odis Raymond (1923-1967), Lola M. (1927-2023), Opal Faye (1929-1931), Herman Lester (1932-2010), and Rayford L. (1937-1956). Her FindAGrave link is here.
Family Focus #6, A Roll Call of the Children, continued…
Clarence William Hogue (1909-1999) – married Cleavie Boales (1907-1993) on 6 Oct 1928 in Jefferson Co., OK. They had four children: Gayther Gene (1929-2020), living son, born 1935, Bobby Lenvil (1938-2010), and Aldonna Sharon (1940-2018). His original memorial is here, but the family changed plans and put Clarence in a nearby crypt.
Buford Lee Hogue (1912-1966) – Buford married once for a short while but never had any children. He died from the effects of alcoholism in Gilroy, CA, aged 54. Go here for his memorial.
Henry Jackson Hogue (1914-2009) – my grandfather, married Crystal Faye Larner (1919-2007) on 27 Jan 1936 in Cordell, Washita Co., OK. They had three children: Charles William (my dad, 1937-2003), living son, born 1944, and living son, born 1945. Henry and Faye’s cremated ashes are scattered in the Pacific Ocean.
Charles Sherman Hogue (1917-1985) – married Alta Faye Teafatiller (1923-2002) on 04 Feb 1939 in Leon, Love Co., OK. They had one son, Willis Montgomery (1942-2002). All three are buried in Merced, CA.
Family Focus #6 in the Books…
Charles Sherman Hogue passed away 24 Jul 1917 and is buried in the Rubottom Cemetery, in the same plot as his daughter Mary Ann. Lenora Gatlin Noble Hogue died 24 Dec 1959 in Gilroy, CA and is buried there in the Gavilan Hills Cemetery. There are more detailed histories of my great grandparents throughout this blog. Here’s a great shot of Nora and the kids, from around 1912. Clockwise from the left: Clarence, Leonard, Frankie Noble, Fannie May, and Buford. This photo courtesy of Barbara Wallace, a cousin of mine from the Warthen family.
